The quake struck at 2:55 p.m. (0755 GMT) off the southern coast of the main island of Java with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0. The U.S. Geological Survey says it had a depth of about 30 miles (50 kilometers).
A tsunami alert was issued but revoked less than an hour later.
The Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysics Agency put the quake's strength at 7.3. The 7.0 magnitude quake, as recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey, shook buildings in the capital Jakarta and flattened homes in villages closer to the epicentre in West Java.
The health ministry said it was sending medical teams to Tasikmalaya near the epicentre of the quake in West Java.

Indonesian villagers continued a frantic search on Thursday for people buried in the rubble, after a powerful quake killed at least 57 and destroyed thousands of homes in the hills of West Java.
